Some pre-show conversation concerned an event excursion to a
historic jail, therefore, the concert started out with a confluence
of songs about jail and some leftover topical songs from the
Valentine's Show. We then drifted in to some more requests,
especially George Harrison and Cat Stevens.

All in all, a fun night. Thanks to everyone who tuned in!
The next one will be Thursday, March 16th, which is
St Patrick's Day Eve! Look for lots of Irish, Celtic, Traditional,
and Tavern-Type fare.

Last night was the set that almost wasn't.

Just as I got set up to start, the clouds and thunder rolled in and a very instense storm made for a delay of over an hour and a half.

I managed to get most of my stuff under cover and protected, except....
The laptop.
It has been on it's last legs for awhile now, working kind of okay, but with the case and screen held together by kludges and strutural load bearing duct tape.
Fortunately, I have a replacement cheapo thriftstore find laptop waiting in the wings that functions, but does not have a driver for my memory stick. And it's slowwwwwwwwwww. It may do for now. But I've decided that it's time for a machine that is an upgrade as well as a replacement. I've found something online (a refurb) that looks to fit the bill, and so now to see if I can do better than that for the price at a couple of stores. I need something that can run Audacity and some Midi software, has decent audio, preferably running Windows NT and has a decently wide screen. Disc space isn't too big a deal as I'm storing all my work externally and using the computer drives as backup. I don't really need email capability on the laptop but I may someday, so I won't eschew features that enable it, they're just not the priority.
As if that weren't bad enough: there was some sort of rainwater leakage in the Restaurant itself.
But the landlord was called and a contractor was out to look at the problem REAL FAST (damn! What should *I* do to get a response like that)
So....
It really looked for awhile as if last night wasn't going to happen and was just going to be a loss all around.
But then, just as the weatherman promised, the skies cleared, the temperature dropped and the night just took off.

At the behest of Al (one of the waitstaff) I decided to do a bunch of songs last night on the banjo. Damian's ablility to withstand extreme weather was also a factor. So the night started off with a great big banjo set.

Oh, and again, I brag. Compare this set to previous ones. You'll see alot of overlap, but also alot of songs that are unique as well. Heck, there's stuff in this setlist you might be hard pressed to find in ANY of my setlists.

Balticon Wrapup

Tuesday, 1 June 2010 19:25
maugorn: (Default)
Balticon this year was an extra good time. What kept making it extra good was that my 'rules for having a good time at a con' kept paying off.
Rule one- make new friends- Check Plus. (This includes btw making an effort to get to know distant or casual acquaintances better.)
Rule two- Spend quality time with old friends- Check!
Rule three- Reconnect with people you don't see often or may have lost track of/touch with- extra double plus triple check!!
Rule four- Do something you don't normally do or have never done- Check.

Personal highlights- despite the inconvenience of not being right there, it did save us some cash not having a room and commuting. And that also gave me & [livejournal.com profile] patches023 some extra quality time, which has been on a slight ebb lately with both of us busy on non-congruent schedules.

I am SO pleased that Patches' hula hooping session on Friday was such a success. I hope it continues.
Most of Friday was spent socialising and I was more than happy to do it.
I also got to *finally* change the strings on my 12 string. And as I predicted, I found takers for the old ones.
I also did get in some time late in the Filk room.

Anyway,
Saturday was the big day. More socialising, and then Patches' Medieval Dance and my concert.
Medieval Dance was a big success and I got to step a smidge out of my musical comfort zone by spending it mostly playing the Bass. (Ah my lovely hollowbody shortscale, I LOVE THIS BASS SO MUCH!)
After the dance, I had a full HOUR of setup time. This let me have a whole bunch of my arsenal tuned and nearly ready to go.
I'm very happy with my setlist:
		5/20/10 Concert at Balticon 2010

01) Ballad Of Serenity (soundcheck)
02) Wondrous Stories
03) The Black Fox
04) Butterfly
05) It's Only A Paper Moon
06) Triad
07) Clyde Water
08) Black Water Hattie (electric 12string guitar)
09) Johnny Jump Up (bouzouki)
10) Whiskey In The Jar (banjo)
11) Music, Sex, & Cookies

Attendance was astonishing. Usually one of my con performances will draw 4-20 people. MANY more than that showed up this time!
And during "Paper Moon" a bunch of them were DANCING. It will someday be my punishment for often playing with my eyes closed to keep risking missing moments like that.

After that, a bunch of us ordered Chinese food and had some decent chowing of down.
I dropped in briefly at a Chocolate party, where, truth to be told, I was actually more interested in the fruit and berries than the chocolate fondue. I also found some good conversation!
Then more conversation elsewhere into the night and a little more late night singing in the Filk Room.

Sunday had it's excellent points as well.
LOTS of good conversations.

ExpandI made a SCENE! )

Despite that distraction, I did manage to get alot of musical work done, which was mostly working on my "Bible" which is a notebook where I'm charting out my entire repertoire in terms of what key I play the song, capo position, harmonicas used, etc.

A bunch of folks went out for Indian food and that was good, except their service was SLOW. I mean REALLY SLOW.

Eventually it was time for what came to be one of my biggest personal highlights of the weekend: The Markland Reunion.
I started my entrance into what passes for the local geek tribes in Star Trek and SF Fandom. But the biggest lasting marks upon me and the most important group to me was always Markland. That's where I started learning music. That's where I got my love of re-enactment, and that's where *I*, my ways, my attitude, always fit in the best. So many of the people who meant the most to me in my most formative years were there. It was hard not to cry sometimes. And it was cute to find pictures of me being 20, all young and shiny, but seeing that, while I was definitely on my journey, I had not yet found myself. Tho, in one picture, it seemed like the ONLY thing about me that has changed is that now I have more stomach and less hair. ALL of my attitude and philosophy is right there in the shot. I'm pleased to know that I have (even though I've grown alot) remained true to a spark I've had for such a long time. (Yes, I'm working on finding a copy of the pic). It was so great to reconnect and recollect together. It was like the end of the LOST finale. I kept half expecting one of our passed Elder members (like Dick Eney or someone like him) to come thru the door so he could lead us all into the Light together. A few people I wished could have made it didn't, but that would have just made an 11 (on a 1-10 scale) into a 12. And the fun is not over yet either. A very fun and close friend whom I'd totally lost touch with turns out to have been found and friended by others on Facebook. And this morning they friended me back. 2010 is VERY much being the year that alot the best times and the best people of my past, rather than being lost and unfinished chapters, get to be reconnected to my story here and now. And now maybe all the disasters and Epic Fails and mistakes, rather than being those things that take everything good from me, and constantly force me to start over from scratch; maybe the BAD stuff can be the stuff that gets lost and left behind. And maybe now can start the Age where what I have left- what I have BACK are times with my friends and "family" and all the GOOD times we had and still have together.
Is that too much to hope or work for?
Anyway, the Reunion was great, and the last of it broke up around 3am. I stumbled off to the Movie Room where I slept thru _Forbidden Planet_ and then about 1/2 of _Mars Needs Women_. Alas, I don't know how it ends yet, as a power surge rebooted the computer they'd set up as Robo Projectionist. By then it was about dawn. I took a brief nap in the van and then came back for a sluggish but happy Monday morning and end to the con.
The very end was something I never expected. By pure chance I was passing by and reminded that Dave Clement and [livejournal.com profile] gorgeousgary were going to do a concert of Canadian tunes. I'd heard only precious little of Dave all these years and pounced on the opportunity, ONLY to be pounced upon by Gary when I came in and asked if I'd like to join in with the show.
Dayam!
I retrieved a few more instruments and commenced to putting in my occasional 2c and song contribution in a set that included some Gordon Lightfoot and a whole lot of Stan Rogers. So I got to actually jam with Dave and Gary which turned an expected treat into an unexpected feast.
Nothing could have topped that as an end of a con, so I made one more round of goodbyes and felt fine leaving after that.

Last night's set at New Deal Cafe had much specialness to it. For one thing, it having been Bob Dylan's birthday the day before, I resolved to play alot of Bob Dylan songs, which I did. It's a fun thing to note that only 3 song out of last night's set were NOT penned or sung by Mr Dylan.

Also worth noting was the very first instance of what will hopefully become a regular occurrence. A fellow came up to me to inform me that he was a recent transplant to the area and that he saw me listed as performing at New Deal Cafe (which he'd heard good things about) curious as to whether my playing would be worth the trip out, he checked out my website
www.stevehaug.com and liked my versions of "Long Black Veil" and "Jambalaya" (which you can download!) enough to come out to hear what else I could do.

Also worth noting was that there was a big contingent of folks whom I recognised as being part of the local Greenbelt crowd, but alas, I don't have all the names. But it was cool to see them turning out in such numbers when little old I am playing.

There was a bit of a downer tho, in that during setup I had to fight off a veritable HORDE of gremlins, making every. little. step.harder.and.take.longer.than.it.should. I actually started a couple of minutes late. Grrrr.
But the good news is that they were ALL vanquished and squashed, and I wound up sounding great, with very little problem once I got started.

New Deal is such a nice room to play sometimes, especially with the freedom I have there to play whatever's in my heart.
I just wish I could play longer there. A three hour set would be a GREAT set there.s
maugorn: (Default)
Have I mentioned lately that I *LOVE* this new gig.

6 whole hours of playing last night and an unprecedented opportunity to scratch some musical itches that have been on my back, in some cases, for years. Alot of last night's list were in regular rotation back in the days of busking in Alexandria, and I've had precious little opportunity to revisit them in favor of more popular selections or recent additions that I wanted to showcase.

I even got to do a thorough baker's dozen binge on Beatles tunes at the behest of my employer.

Well, anyway, here, once again, is a lovely LONG setlist (where again, I get to brag of overlap with the previous C&B gigs, but also alot of tunes not on any of the previous setlists):

And the excellence increases, as now I'm starting to draw from my friends. It's a trickle so far, but I'm confident that will expand as more folks realise just how cool this place is.
And in the "Who'd'a thunk it?" department I was introduced to an alcoholic beverage I actually liked:
Here
It's apparently a "Raspberry Lambic" and aside from barely having any alcohol, it tastes better than any berry flavored soda I've ever tried! Thanks for letting me try it, Michelle!

Did I mention I LOVE this place?
Look to see me there about twice a month, thru Sept (and likely beyond)

They feed me. They pet me. They love me. This stray has definitely found a new door that I will be scratching at ALOT.
Last night's set was excellent! Nice and long, and again, with the opportunity to really dig in and play a goodly amount of material and cover some ground. I got to put in a NICE set on the bouzouki. I haven't used my banjo here yet, and I haven'e made my mind up about that yet. But I LIKE a place where I can get in a decent set on the bouzouki and still have time for alot of other good stuff! And if you compare this set to the last one there, I think that you will find a hefty percentage of songs that are NOT in common. I LIKE a venue where I can do that.
he crowd, while a tad reserved and quiet, were very appreciative. I could tell because the tips were fantastic!
And for the 1st time here, some of my usual/unusual crowd showed up!
After about 6pm, the patio was packed all night too!
I'm hoping that more of my friends can begin to make it to these, as they will not only get to hear some whole new dimensions to what I do, but it's an awesome place to hang out as well!
I like the Thursdays, but tell me, would Fridays work better for getting more of you, my more regular readers and listeners to come out? I suspect yes, but I'd like some confirmation of interest before I start booking that way.

I blame Mercury in Retrograde for the total usurpation of my plans for last night's set.
This was one of those sets where you just couldn't know what was gonna happen next.
My friends pulled out requests from places where Left Field is but a distant memory.
It's not a bad thing, but it does make me wish that these New Deal sets had at least
one extra hour so that I could indulge people and still work the crowd and/or get to songs
that I had hoped to get to. There's a new (to me) song waiting to come out. I think it's
next best opportunity will be Balticon.

That said, last night's attendance was very good (with a larger than usual contingent of
Greenbelt folk!) And on top of that, the place was pre-loaded with LOTS of diners and remained
packed thru the whole night. I actually needed to turn up at one point.
And despite my personal feeling that I wasn't working the crowd as well as I could,
tips were way above average. So I musta done something right.

Profound thanks to everyone who came out.

Cock & Bowl

Expanda setlist long enough to merit a cut! )

Yowza! Now THAT is a setlist. I got to play for about 6 hours with a short break to snarf down a sandwich.
The owners were way impressed with my fortitude, the volume of my output, and the quality. I was set up unplugged on their patio but everyone heard just fine, and I got nothing but good reviews and feedback all night. There were even some folks quietly singing along, and some very nice, but general requests.

Pending the clearing of smoke and wreckage from the chaos of opening a restaurant, and a consultation of calendars, I fully expect to be back there, and was asked ALOT when that would be. Given how good these guys are as employers and the very generous tips I received, I know, on my part that they'll have me at "hello".

I lOVE this place. It's a tiny tiny "Belgian" style Bistro (word is that their beer selection alone makes it worth the trip). The cooking is definitely European, and the Belgium influence shows up as mussels (it was a *Dangerous* night to be a mussel in Occoquan last night), and WAFFLES!! The atmosphere on their patio was very congenial and bohemian.
Attendance, understandably, had none of my usual crowd, given the notice and the distance, but by way of consolation for that alot of the owners' friends are from their Dagorhir days and quite a few remembered me from the Yule feasts I've played at. The crowd, was hip, mellow, and intelligent. And with the length of the set, I did not feel any pressure when taking requests, and since they tended to be open-ended (like for specific artists/groups), I could really enjoy playing several of the "usual suspects" for them, and then being free to dig just a little deeper while I was at it. And for most of the night I played to a patio that was mostly full.

Here's hoping that their excellent start becomes a sustainable trend. Word on the street in Occoquan is that a decent restaurant is long overdue! So I am optimistic on this front.

Sometimes it takes me a time or two at a venue to really dial in to the vibe I'm playing for. This, felt immediately as if I was really in a place that "gets" what I do. I felt like I snapped right into place. These are the moments when all I've sacrificed to have this job is worth it.

It can be a bit of a bear to get to this place, as, from DC, it involves a few miles of going on I95 South from the Beltway.
Tho the US Rt.1 slog is also viable- you've at least got traffic lights.
But whether I'm there or not, CHECK THIS PLACE OUT. They are sweet people launching a dream, and very worthy of whatever support can be mustered. If you like decent mid-ranged price Bistro fare, awesome beer that you can't just get anywhere and a truly genuine Continental atmosphere, go, and go often.

Oh, and the teensy tinsy town of Occoquan VA (literally sitting in the shadow of Woodbridge) is as quaint as it gets.

And the punchline- came when I got home last night and found a well-wish and a high compliment from someone whose musicianship and talent I've long admired and have sought to emulate (and who *has* mentored me on occasion)

It's not hard to sleep well on a night like that. Not all days suck. Who knew?!

And today, my hands are a little swollen. Poor poor me....
maugorn: (Default)
Thru a friend of a friend, a lady named Chelas Montanye (who also heard me at Spoutwood) I was invited to perform at a gallery openning in Lancaster PA. Ironically enough, I'll likely be back in Lancaster next Saturday if my Grandpa's informal memorial gathering doesn't conflict with my Constellation gig.

I arrived a bit late for the actual start the gig. It only took me four hours, thank you very much DC/Baltimore trafficular SUCKAGE! Had we needed amplification, we would have been muchly vexed. Fortunately it was a small venue
Fortunately, also my musical co-conspirator for the evening, Rebecca Gold had actually arrived on time, and was in the middle of her solo set as I set myself up.

Becca played a lovely set with some great songs in it, and then I played this set:

Then Becca and I had great fun for the rest of the evening taking turns (more or less) picking songs to play together.
I'm not sure I'm remembering the order or every single song, but it was something like this:

Songs with Rebecca Gold:
Nights In White Satin Rebecca: Guitar & Voice Me: Recorder
My Back Pages Rebecca: Voice Me: Guitar & Voice
Creep Rebecca: Voice Me: Guitar
Brown Eyed Girl Rebecca: Guitar & Voice Me: Mandolin & Voice
So Long, Marianne Rebecca: Voice Me: Guitar
Let It Be Rebecca: Voice Me: Guitar
Can't Buy Me Love Rebecca: Voice Me: Guitar & Harmonica
Hey Jude Rebecca: Voice Me: Guitar
The Joker Rebecca: Voice Me: Guitar & Harmonica
Wish You Were Here Rebecca: Voice Me: Guitar, Voice, & Harmonica
Hotel California Rebecca: Voice Me: Guitar & Harmonica

It being a bit out of my usual stomping grounds, I didn't know many people there, only Phil, Becca, and KT.
But I met some cool people, made a very favorable impression on the gallery's owner and got to know our hostess, Chelas better, as well as her work. She does nice (faerie) art in general, but her most fun, most impressive and most jaw-droppingly stunning work is when she uses people as her canvas, which she did in the back of the gallery (since body-painting can be a bit risque).

I sold a couple of CDs and shared some modest tips with Becca.
Despite the traffic and all, it was alot of fun and a rare treat to get to jam with Becca too!
They assure me that more folks show up when the weather is nicer, and so you may see me up there for some more "Music Fridays" at the Studio24 Annex. You may also see me at more events and shows arranged by Chelas Montanye.
You can see some of her work on Facebook.

Alas, the rest of the weekend is a bit lonely, with [livejournal.com profile] patches023 off on a sewing retreat.
I'm not doing a great job at getting alot of work done, but it's nice to relax a bit too in the quiet.

I am starting to catch up on some publicity stuff tho, which is always a chore, but a useful one.
I also got a call this morning from Billy Bardo, confirming me for the NY Faerie Fest in June, so YAY! for that!

The set last night was fantastic. There was a small game delay as I figured out how to plug into their new system, (which sounds FANTASTIC, BTW), but it was only a short delay at most. Note to self: Get around to making that yoke to attach a 1/4" female jack to your new hotspot and get a 1/4"f to 1/4"f connector (gender bender). With those two items in hand next time, my monitor connection to the main will be cleaner and I can use my hotspot again. Not that the house monitor is bad, it's just that my hotspot will let me hear better at a lower volume.

So there were some great and unusual requests last night. And excellent attendance.
And I got to play Duclinea amplified and she sounded magnificent! I LOVE my new amp!

There were two small downsides: The recording stopped at some point because the battery ran down. From now on, new batteries every set or plugged in. No exceptions. The other minor glitch was that the cold was not completely gone. With some Afrin, it wasn't an issue until the very very end, where I had a cough that I couldn't shake creep into the very last song. Grr.
Other than that, I seemed to be in excellent voice.

I'll be back at New Deal on Tuesday 1/26/10 7-9pm

This adventurous gig started yesterday at about 3:30, when I left my house. I wanted what I *thought* would be a quick stop to grab some food. But Nothing was quick yesterday.
Not
A
Single
Damn
Thing.

By sometime after 4, I'd found my way onto the highway, where we slogged and slogged and slogged.
If there's no major obstructions, the trip to York can take as little as 90 minutes.
But even 83 was clogged and sloggy. The DC Trafficular suckhole had expanded to 70 miles of stop and go traffic from my house to just north of Timonium. Methinks that there was a panic of travellers all trying to get somewhere before the storm hit.
Nice try kids.
As gig time loomed closer and closer I got worried and tried to call ahead. Silly me, I don't have that number in my phone, and didn't think to check my notebook, as our contacts had been all by email for this. Get this: Verizon 411 has no listing for York Coffee at 100 S Beaver St in York PA. I've run into this before where cell phone 411 has lists only for what *they* care to give you.
Screw them. I'm mostly happy with Verizon, but SCREW them and their bad attitude. It's only a fucking phone number and a complete listing of telephone numbers is not a big deal to obtain or maintain. Your operators *can* be allowed to access Google, you know...or even physical phone books. Sheesh!
Anyway, the gig was scheduled for 7. And..... That's when I arrived.
Fortunately, the place is teensy weensy, and I didn't need any amplification. So my setup was analogous to my current Constellation Books setup, with the laptop, acoustic and electric 12 string, and recording rig taking about 15 minutes to throw together.
So I got started about 1/2 hour late. Suboptimal, but okay.

As you can see, the set rocked!
Massive doses of generic(Afrin), B12, throat lozenges, CocaCola, Water, and an hour of in-van vocal warmups made the head cold very nearly transparent. I might have the upper hand on this one. My voice was in very good shape, and I got nothing but great revues from the very (unfortunately)) sparse crowd.
But Steve and Andrea were both pleased, and we're going to try a couple more dates and see if:
1) We can find a better time with more people there already
2) We can browbeat more of our friends to show up.

As it stands, it was not a complete loss, as I did sell a couple of CDs.

And then, dum dum dummmmmmm- the drive home.
Which started out very pleasant. A couple of flakes of snow were visible by the time I hit the Beltimore Baltway. Snow started to pick up as I circled B'more, and then it started to stick about halfway round, and then the van started to plane a little bit and I had to slow down. I need new wiper blades, and maybe a defroster that makes real heat.
But I pushed on, and made it to 295, which was actually in better shape than the B'more Beltway- and had less traffic, I'm sure, than 95 would have had (plus 295 goes almost right to my house).

But the snow thickened, and we all had to slow down some more. About 35 was my upper limit.
And [livejournal.com profile] patche023 called and we traded traffic sucks stories, and were all set to meet up at home, when....

I ran out of gas.

All that stop and go traffic, and the pedal to the metal once traffic was gone, and more stop n go traffic, plus dash lights that aren't so bright, left me not really realising how low the tank was.
Yes, go right ahead and play those five diminished chords in a descending chromatic progression.

Fortunately, it was not game over.
[livejournal.com profile] patche023 came to the rescue. But first she had to stop by the house, get a gas can, fill the gas can and get up to where I was, in all of the worsening storm and thickening traffic. Two friendly park authority cops seemed to be relieved that I wasn't freezing to death and in need of an ambulance and a tow truck. The latter stuck around until [livejournal.com profile] patche023 arrived and helped us get back into traffic once Mama Tiger was re-started. Fortunately, out of gas was the problem, and not something more sinister.
I gotta tell you, it's a lonely feeling to see a car coming up behind you with flashers on, slowing down, but then turn out not to be [livejournal.com profile] patche023 as it goes around you and drives off. Far too many of those...
But eventually it *was* her, and so the "Go Home Scene- take two" was shot with the new revisions. The only real sucky thing was that because of the delay, our final push home was in weather that had MUCH degraded from where we were 90 minutes prior.
I really need new wiper blades!
Nonetheless, about 45 minutes later I was happily spinning drive wheels on the snow as I plowed into the driveway.

But for some reason, yesterday, my spirit didn't sag as it could in these situations where it seems like someone's got out their Maugie doll and a box of pins.

And I'm not too bummed about being cancelled today.
I think it's because I know that there will, in fact, be plenty more gigs to play, and if it takes THIS much to give me a hard day, and I'm still intact at the end, it bodes very well for my future.
And it gives me a couple more days to actually deal with the cold, and not just work around it.

Man this weekend was one big gremlin infestation. Of course I wanted to record this set, but somehow every single battery in my possession was dead, and the Zoom would not even turn on. More batteries were located, which were also dead. Finally, I had the inspiration to check the power supply for my Reverb pedal, and miracles! it was actually compatible. So recording was saved. Then my mic stand wouldn't behave the way I'd gotten it to at Philcon and Darkover, so it was back to awkward switching between mic'ing the acoustic and the electric guitars. Grrr. Fortunately, I did get it all to work, and we'll see how the recordings came out. And the false alarm 'dead' harmonica- was fine!

This was pretty wild set. Unlike many sets, I started this out on the banjo, playing a request for Lauretta to honour her dad.
I didn't have "On Top Of Old Smokey" in my repertoire as of yesterday, but we live in this age of miracles where we were able to track down the lyrics online, put them right onto my memory stick and tada! One more song on the list.

So there were some good Clancy Bros selections at first, then a bit of a wintry mix, Michelle was in the mood for love/wedding songs (son getting married soon), a debut of a really grim Decemberists' song, and various things on the Electric 12 string(Dulcinea), making her Constellation debut.
Also, in the process of getting re-acquainted with Greg Lake's "I Believe In Father Christmas", and working on some new projects as well lately, I've been reminded of how much I really dig all of Greg Lake's slow ballads and love songs that he did with ELP. So I've been working up and reworking arrangements thereto, and debuted "C'est La Vie" yesterday.
My biggest regret, as always, was not getting to actually play enough music. A three hour gig is fun, a five/six hour gig would be heaven. (I know, I'm weird that way)

Dinner afterwards was good, and I often look forward to that, as I don't have to play thru the fun conversation.

And today, I confirmed that there was nothing in fact actually wrong with the digital recorder. It really was indeed a collection of 12 dead AA batteries in two different stashes.

This set was just a little shortened as it took a smidge longer than we'd remembered to get there and to set up.
I've been away to long to have all the routines down.

Also, we had some nasty Gremlinage in that the nice box I've been carrying CDs in finally disintegrated, dumping them all over the sidewalk, and naturally, breaking some cases and scratching a couple of discs.

The malingering cough and sinuses were mostly cleared up thanks to the antibiotics. But there were some final blows that it was trying to land upon me, so I got myself good and dosed up with Afrin, and had some Coke to clear the throat and warmed up my voice, pretty much the whole way.

I'm told that it all sounded real good, and that nobody but I could tell I'd had a cold. Good. But I could tell. I fought valiantly to keep my voice on track, and won until just after the last song, which sort segued into hard limit and a big coughing fit.
The requests were fun, and the Halloweenish theme did manifest, and "The Hell Of It" is a fine addition to the repertoire.

Afterwards, dinner at IHOP was scored, and we shared the place with about a hundred kids dressed up for what was probably a Homecoming dance.

There should be more dates at Esoterica this fall/winter, just as soon as schedules are consulted, cross-indexed, and dates pencilled in. Look for something near the Solstice!
