Some pre-show conversation concerned an event excursion to a
historic jail, therefore, the concert started out with a confluence
of songs about jail and some leftover topical songs from the
Valentine's Show. We then drifted in to some more requests,
especially George Harrison and Cat Stevens.

All in all, a fun night. Thanks to everyone who tuned in!
The next one will be Thursday, March 16th, which is
St Patrick's Day Eve! Look for lots of Irish, Celtic, Traditional,
and Tavern-Type fare.

Taking an afternoon's break from doing my webconcert publicity and adding back FB friends, to continue some cleaning and decluttering I've been doing.
So I pulled a milk crate out of my wreck of a studio, because it looked like it would be easy to sort. Turns out it's a present from my past self:
It's entirely full of recycling from the last attempt to clean up the studio. It was as easy to deal with as dumping it into a box that's going out with the recycling tonite. And now I have another empty milk crate to help with the greater task at hand.
Thank you Past Me!

The Story

On Jan 19th, I got a notification that there was a new login (from a new location) on my FB account.

There were actually several. I was in the middle of doing something away from my computers and phone (shocking!) and so I missed it. When I caught it, the first thing I tried to do was change my password. Then I saw that there was a new "friend" that "I" had accepted; nobody I'd ever met, known, or known of. So I unfriended and blocked them. THEN I got a notification that my account was about to be shut down for violations of "Community Standards". I got to my wall for about 30 seconds, just enough to see what looked like some links to Pro-Middle-East terrorist type propaganda, and before I could remove it or even actually see it, the account was shut down. In hindsight, I may have done things in the wrong order, or maybe these assholes were good enough that there was nothing I could have done to thwart them.

In hindsight, I also needed non-reused passwords for all the things, but my sievelike memory for (not music) and my bad typing skills kept me procrastinating that.

Cautionary Tale there.

Well, I tried to go through the steps to recovery of the account and kept coming across confusing, apparently contradictory instructions, and eventually I found my way onto a page to have the decision to shut me down "reviewed". Somehow that meant that I "disagreed" with their decision, which would have to be "reviewed" and if they determined that my Wall violated "Community Standards", it would be shut down permanently.

So... last week, that's what happened.

But, I *was* able to set up a *new* account, which I did. If you've been a reader of mine on FB, please friend me again.

https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090671709273

The surface loss can be recovered. I'm sure I'll reconnect with everyone again, but the regrettable losses will be the tagged photographs and the writing that occasionally showed up in "memories". Again, a cautionary tale. A lot more of my posts will be crossposted from now on.
I had been doing that with LJ, but people were fleeing LJ for going all totalitarian, so I'd kind of given that up. So here is where that will happen now, because a world where my wisdom and my jokes are not saved is just intolerable.

This is another one of those sets that I look forward
to every year, if for no other reason than the truly
wacky variety of songs that I wind up playing. Many of the
songs, while not direct requests, were the result of choices
I put to various of those in attendance. I'm also happy
that I got to highlight a bit of my original work.

Alas, the time we had was far too short for all of
the songs I'd wanted or wished I could play. BUT-
in two weeks there will be another, and I'll be totally
happy to play some of the leftovers that I didn't get
to hit for this set.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in!

The next webconcert is Thursday, 3/6/23 7:30 pm

PS.
I just got confirmation for an IN PERSON show at Maryland Meadworks!
It's on 4/28/23 7-10pm.
The theme/occasion is ARBOR DAY.
Look for songs that mention trees in the lyrics

I'm sorting through boxes and boxes of things that were often mediocre attempts at cleaning up for things by tossing them in a box and setting them out of the way.

So, now, as I do that, I'm almost continuously finding stuff that I'd either given up on seeing or things I just *knew* had to be somewhere. There's been some tragedy, of course, but also lots of little triumphs. There's also hilarity. There are things, things I've needed, things I used, things I'd *wanted* to use, that I just couldn't find in the moment. So I replaced them. So now, after a couple of weeks at this, I've consolidated about five cheap multimeters. It's kind of hilarious, but...every reunion with something I've misplaced earns me points in this game.

I think I'm on a trajectory for Championship Level.

One of my more-distraction-than-comforts filling in the gap from missing FB is sorting and decluttering. Between decades of neglect and the mess of the addition and other renovation, there is SO much crap to sort, re-sort and fix. I'm doing a lot of that. And with the amazingly convenient extra swap space/buffer in the new addition (now that it's done), I'm able to do that alot more effectively and with incredibly less impact on the ordinary life stuff.

But first, a bit of catching up. For close to three weeks now, I haven't had access to my FB account and have zero idea when or if that will ever be fixed. It got hacked and accessed remotely. Whomever did that then tried to friend someone I have no idea of, and then (or simultaneously) posted no less than NINE highly offensive, dangerous, hate filled things or links or (something - I never got to see past the thumbnail), that looked like pro (ISIS) propaganda- terrorist stuff. I got the notification of the remote login (several, in fact), but as I was going through all of the steps that my very panicked brain said I should do- changing my password, banning the non-friend, I never got to the point where I could see the offensive crap and delete it... before the account was shut down. BAM! I honestly can't blame FB for that, but the fact remains that I (ME!) did not post that stuff and so after I was trying to go through what looked like steps to make things right, request a review, etc, I have been shunted to a screen that essemtially says "You disagreed with the decision to suspend your account and so now we have to review it and if you don't pass the review, the account will be permanently deactivated". With some helpful intercession, I managed to gain *just* enough access to delete (hopefully) the offensive posts. However, that has not changed the status of things and that stern, ominous sounding screen is still ALL I can see if I try to log into FB as me.

Time is apparently ticking down to some deadline where the account will be automatically shut down. I have a bit more than a week before that happens. It's also unclear whether it's just my account that will be shut down or ME who is now "off" of FB, with no apparent course for recourse or appeal.

Why is that such a big deal? Well, it just is. If I lose my FB account, I lose contact with a lot of people; A LOT OF PEOPLE. Sure, if I get a new account, I could build all that back up, but I also lose photos, tags to photos, writing I haven't archived, access to lists I used as publicity for my gigs and (now also) webconcerts, contacts for gigs, contacts for potential gigs, on and on and on. It's a setback; a MASSIVE SETBACK, that could not have come at a worse time as this time of the year is when I line up a lot of my paying work. I have other avenues for some, but not all, so I have to do workarounds. Building it all back up will take time AND there WILL be things permanently lost, some of which WILL be work related.

So between work and other things, I am NOT one of those people who can just walk away from FB, clap some dust from my hands and claim that I won't miss the time sink of arguing with idiots and endless cat pics. I USED FB for a lot more than that, and I enjoyed the extended contact.

I also missed a place where longer and deeper posts were more normalised, which *had* been LJ back Before The Black Ships Came and everyone fled here. I had been intending to move my LJ over to here, and this latest crap just reminded me that I was past due to do it.

In the meantime, there is LOTS that needs doing, and LOTS of neglect to undo. I resent seeing this as an expanded opportunity, but I will take it nonetheless. My future self will no doubt thank me for it, as will Sonya. But just as with all to many other times that I've fixed things and stubbornly put one foot in front of the other to get past the wreckage of yet another stupid setback, I don't have any pollyannaish notions of making lemonade from lemons or some shit like that. The stuff has to be done, and while getting more done is good, this is not a Good Space. I won't look back from the future and see me having been done any favours right now. If you comment, please, PLEASE refrain from saying that.

Happy Groundhog Day! The set started out with a song that
specifically mentioned groundhogs! The set was a trifle
unusual (for the webconcerts, at least) in that I started
with the banjo! There were more songs with critters in them,
of course. There were some excellent requests, which led to
some excellent segues and some forays into some corners of the
repertoire that don't get visited as often as others.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in!
The next one will be on 2/15 and will be for Valentine's Day,
with songs both pro and anti LOVE!

19) What A Wonderful World

A wonderful, yet bittersweet set.
We observed Edgar Allen Poe's Birthday and then
the passing of David Crosby with multiple requests
for songs he helped write. I also was struck
with the idea of asking people to mention their
favourite songs from my repertoire, and that
generated a bunch of most excellent requests,
some from several people, even.

The bittersweet part came that day when I
found out my FB account had been hacked and
hijacked to post highly objectional, offensive,
terrorist propaganda. FB rightly shut that
down, but now I'm in limbo waiting to see if
they believe that was not me and give me
my account back into my control.

Soooo, I don't know what my fate is going
to be. If I can't get onto FB, my current
plan is to make these announcements &c via
email. If you like the webconcerts you may
want to message Sonya with an email address.
(Because my email may be compromised as well)

At any rate, the next webconcert will still
happen as planned, on Thursday, Feb 2nd.
Yes, it's Groundhog Day, and many fun musical
antics and shenanigans can be perpetrated.
Zoom seems to be uncompromised, so your same
link should still work.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in!
Thanks for the awesome requests!
And thanks in advance for tuning in on 2/2!

It was a fine night! I got to sing about several
ultra-important things, like, for instance:
National Bird Day!
It was one of those in attendance who brought
this ultra-important fact to light for us, and
so I marked the occasion with a couple of songs
that mentioned or alluded to birds.
I also got to scratch some itches for some
John Denver and some Johnny Cash.
My favourite of my originals was also requested,
so YAY! for that.
And... I got to end the night with one of
my favourite songs *by* The Byrds. (well, by
Bob Dylan, actually, but it was the Byrds'
version that inspired me to learn it and
my arrangement of it)

Thanks to everyone who tuned in. The
next webconcert is Thursday, Jan 19th!

I've mentioned before how I look forward the themed sets.
This was no exception. There was excellent seasonal fun
to be had: serious, silly, happy, sad, old, new, EVERYTHING!
Apparently there are apologies to be made for some
weird difficulty for some signing in to the meeting.
I seriously don't know what was going on.
Let me know if you were one of those, as I look into
this. Hopefully that was a quirk and not a thing
that needs fixing.
But attendance was good, nonetheless!
Thanks everyone for tuning in.

The next one, btw is
NEXT THURSDAY, JANUARY 5th!

some music from warm places, as did the many requests.
A singular thing that pleases me is that two of those
requests were for original songs! It was a good night.
Thanks to everyone who tuned in.

I confess: I had my worries about how this set
would go. I was coming off of a very bad bout
with my allergies this past week. I may as well
have had a cold for how I felt and the state
of my vocal apparatus. (No- I wasn't actually
ill with any pathogens. Numerous tests and
consultation with a Dr established that it
was allergies) Nonetheless, I was worried.
My potions, remedies, experience and pure
undiluted stubbornness prevailed, and at least
in MY opinion, I sang OK. And I kept things
uncomplicated instrument-wise pending some
maintainance on the banjo and also to focus
closer on working with myself when I wasn't
100%.

Anyway, the set was framed and the mood
was set with a good handful of most excellent
requests. Along with and around that, there
were some reprises from the weekend, a few
things I'd hoped to play but didn't get to,
and things I haven't played in a while.
The night ended on a very sweet request, as
someone reminded me of Christine McVie's
passing. So ending on my favourite song of
hers seemed apt.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in.
The next one will be Dec 15th.

NB.
There is a *fifth* Thursday in December
this year, on Dec 29th. I am planning for
a concert that night. That's the one that
will be my "Wintry Mix" and where you can
reasonably expect some Holiday Type Music.

10) King Tut
11) Walk Like An Egyptian (debut)
12) Stray Cat Strut
13) Who Knows Where The Time Goes?
14) What A Wonderful World

What a wonderful time it was! I got to tell some of my
worst jokes, and play some great songs.

My highlights included:
-An original that I may or may not ever play again.
I set a limerick about the "Time Travellers' Ball" to
music. And to make a fine meta joke about it, I set
the same limerick sung a bunch of times to a *bunch* of
music from a crazy mix of genres and styles, including
a couple of shoutouts to some musical iconic bits and
cliches, like you do... because: time travel.
Ok, I thought it was hilarious.
-Getting to perform with Scott and a couple of
other members of the Bibbering Humdingers on some
tunes. We're acquainted as colleagues from places
like Pennsic where we usually pass each other by on
our ways to our respective works. I don't think
we've gotten to actually play together. This
was a fun and a precious moment. They added
just the right touches! They also covered some
sonic space as a guest cameo as I took a break.
- I got to debut a song that I thought would be
great fun for this scene.
- What I thought were some perfect tunes to play
for the occasion!

Thank you, Chessiecon for this lovely opportunity.
I hope we get to do it again, some other... time!

This set turned out to be quite the ride!
As foretold, I previewed some songs that I had
planned for Chessiecon (Thanksgiving Weekend)
Part of those plans include playing songs for
the "Time Travellers' Social" event. So...
as I was taking a brief break, I chanced to
overhear someone saying something about ancient
Egypt. And that gave me a very silly idea.
As I was setting myself back up to play my
2nd set, I went and Googled the lyrics for
"King Tut" (that very silly Steve Martin song
of yore) A quick check of a couple of guitar
chords and I was ready to go. It looked as
if I learned and debuted a new song in mere
minutes! It's been awhile since I've gotten
to perform using one of my finest tricks.
To be honest, though, I had some deja vu as
I played the song, and I *think* that I
actually *did* perform King Tut once before,
doing this exact same trick. I think that
it was one of my Halloween weekend sessions
busking in Old Town Alexandria. I seem to
remember pulling up these lyrics on my phone
and playing the song for some guy out on the
town on King Street, in a King Tut costume.
But then I never followed up and actually put
it into my regular repertoire. It's still a
fun trick, and it's been awhile since I've
gotten to do it.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in.
The next one is Thursday, December 1st.

24) Science Fiction Double Feature

I try to go bigger for my Halloween sets and
I dare to say I succeeded. I managed to feature
SEVEN different instruments in the set!

There was a wonderful variety to the songs,
and both requests were for songs I was going to
be playing soon. One of them, came in as I was
*about* to play it.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in, and a warm
welcome (with Evil Laugh this time) to the new
listeners! The next one is Thursday, November
3rd! I'm sure there will be leftover Halloween
treats, upcoming elections that may inspire
political songs, and of course, your requests.

Once again, a wonderful and eclectic set.
The highlights for me included:
-Some more exposure for "This Wandering Day", which
is an awesome song from the new new _Rings Of Power_
TV show. I'd debuted the song at the Ravenwood
Faire, the weekend before.
-A couple of tunes on the Gretsch electric 12 string,
which is not my usual thing.
-Excellent requests!

The lowlights were some persistent weird cable problems
that kept me from recording the set. Grrr.
They're fixed now. I have NO idea why that cable failed
as it's working fine now.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in.
The next one will be October 20th, and likely have
lots of spooky, autumny things in it.

23) Drunken Sailor (With Elena)

Elena and I have been looking forward to this
all year, since last year's was so much fun.
Elena was on first, delighting *and* surprising
us as well. For her finale I joined her on guitar
for "Beast Of Pirate's Bay"!

For an intermission of sorts, I shared a bit of
audio that numbers as one of my "Bucket List Moments":
At a Sci-fi con called Darkover, I won an auction that
granted me the privilege to perform a song with the
band Clam Chowder. These guys have known me forever,
even back before I was a musician. Through the years
they have been my idols, my role models and on occasion,
even my mentors. Now, here I was with them trusting
me enough to hand them chord charts and lyric sheets
and jumping in to play as my backup band. The
result was ragged, but glorious, and WAY TOO MUCH FUN!

Then came my set, with a bunch of my favourites,
my friends' favourites, amazing serendipity and a
sweet debut as well.

We finished up the evening with Elena joining me
to trade verses and sing harmony on the choruses
of "Drunken Sailor".

Naturally, the biggest flaw of the show was that
it was too darn short. My list of songs for the
occasion is about three times as long as this set
list. So, we'll probably have to do it again next
year.

Thank you to all of hale and hearty crew that
signed up for this voyage. Fair winds and following
seas to you all.

N.B.
The next Webconcert with be on the 1st Thursday in
October (10/6). NOT 9/29 this time as I will be on
a voyage to the Ravenwood Renfair near Winchester VA.

It was a night full of that Mercury Retrograde
energy! We made it all work ok, but on my end
it felt as if I were batting at gnats all night.
Nonetheless, it was a pretty sweet set. There
were some most excellent requests and I also
tossed in some previews of the setlist for
the upcoming "Talk Like A Pirate Day EVE"
concert (two days from now) and for the
Enchantment Fairie Festival (tomorrow!).
I'm taking a break from packing for the latter
trip as I type this.
Busy busy this weekend!

Thanks for everyone who tuned in.
