Developments!
Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:55One rainy night last Fall at the Cock & Bowl, we attempted to salvage my set by having me play inside.
It's there that I met and apparently impressed PT. He told me that he owned a restaurant himself and would love to have me play for some special events.
So I started calling and eventually was referred to KM who I went and met and who sounded enthusiastic to hire me for their regular nights at the bar. But it turned into a long (almost discouraging) game of phone tag, and reminders and eventually I sent him some CDs and finally it all led up to me being hired for my first date with them on April 2nd (9pm-1am)

This was definitely a case where I needed all of my persistence to pay off. It really was.
Had I not kept calling and calling and jumping thru every hoop and calling some more, it would not have happened. Had I not been assured a couple of times by the owner himself that he wanted me, I might have given up and stopped "stalking" them. But apparently that's what it took for this one.
And now it's turning into an even more interesting development.
During a conversation with KM yesterday he informed me that they do alot of their booking thru an agency.
He was going to recommend me to them and suggested that I call them up.
So today I did and was informed that they were about to call me, but needed to wrap up some business first and could I wait and let them call me back. Yes, a statement like that could be a polite putoff, but I decided to wait and let it happen (and call them back tomorrow if they didn't call me).
Well, they called me back and they signed me up!
They ask for a commission, but in exchange for that they'll be negotiating fees that make it well worth it.
I'm free to book myself as always, but they ask that if they book me someplace- that I seek repeat engagements there thru them, which is completely reasonable.
I've been contemplating a move like this for some time, but had no idea whom to call or what to say.
And now here a recommendation has them calling me up and making it easy.
I'm thinking it could be really nice having someone who's recommendation has credibility helping me to find more work.
And there's a big potential payoff in the making if this fellow can score me work out of town, like if I travel 200 miles for a festival and there's an Irish bar or someplace nearby there that I can play at after hours and do an easier offset of my travel expenses. I'd thought of this before, but my odds of pulling it off, (I think) just got better.
This could be a very big development.
Stay tuned.
Oh, and the moral:
It's not stubborn-ness- it's *persistence*. And it pays off!
