New Deal Cafe tonight.
Thursday, 5 January 2006 10:52Tonight will be my lovely return to work for 2006. It's a gig at New Deal Cafe, so there probably won't be gobs of cash, but my pockets sure are tired of being empty lately.
I'm contemplating something different tonight. One of my New Year's Resolutions/Gifts to myself this year is some serious expansion of my musical universe. So far, here's how that's beginning to manifest:
-Taking the job with Rhianon.
-Learning flute and hammered dulcimer.
-Getting seriously into a more productive recording schedule
-Upgrading my gear (that's kind of continuous, but there are some puzzle pieces that are overdue)
-Seriously manifesting the "hunt for gigs" (semi-contingent on recordings)
- and this includes some creative "alternative" gigs that I'd only just thought of and *might* be able to pull off with some help. But more on that when it begins to happen.
-And One of the things I should look into is seeing if I can find agents or agencies who can do legwork and have connections to alot of the workaday musical gigs that I know I could be good for.
-WEBSITE
-finding and cataloging the other musical "boxes" or "plateaux" that I find myself in and developing more plans for getting out of them. Then, starting to implement more of those plans.
- And as always, learning more songs. One of my big goals this year is to finally get some of the really complex stuff I've been working on up and running (Like "A Trick Of The Tail" by Genesis)
Anyway, in honor of the New Year, I've printed out a brand new Repertoire list that has >50(!!) songs that weren't there this time last year and I plan to play some of the new things (some of them brand new) tonight. But also to shake up the status quo just a little bit I'm wondering if I could get people to not only request their favorites, but also to request "something you've never requested before"
This could be something you go and mine out of the Repertoire, or some band you know I cover but haven't asked for, something that's either more or less mainstream than my usual fare, or some favorite of an out of town friend, or even something you hate that you know someone else would like.
We're not trying necessarily to start a contest of who can find the most obscure thing for me to play. We're just trying to stretch my usual sound at New Deal a little more. For one thing, there's a lot of stuff I used to play in Old Town (like The Eagles, and James Taylor) that I just don't get a lot of call for here, and I kinda miss it.
Anyway, see ya all there tonight. It's gonna be fun!!
