The elections are coming out as well as I could have hoped, except for those stoopid marriage amendments. It really looks like stuff can maybe, hopefully, finally turn the corner around and away from the right-wing wackiness.
But we’re not out of the woods yet.
I agree with
twistedchick’s prediction that the lame ducks that are left are going to be rabid and dangerous. I LOVE that image BTW.
Rabid lame duck… “Quaaaaaaaaaack!” froth hobble hobble flop!
And Bush has finally ousted Rumsfeld. And replaced him with someone his Dad trusted. I wouldn’t be surprised if his Did recommended the guy. He’s GOT to be smarter than Rumsfeld. Now if we can just get rid of Ashcroft, Cheney, and Bush too
And news came in last night that it looks like Webb squeaked by and won VA. A(barely) Democratic majority in the Senate. Woohoo! I really wouldn't blame Allen if he asked for a recount, tho.
7,000 votes is a pretty slim margin, and I think everyone would sleep better if it were double checked. Let's hope that Allen can at least be polite about it and be a gracious non-victor if it comes back confirmed that Webb won. His Evil overlords might not want that, but his manner is his choice not theirs, and he can bloody well remember that if he wants any political future.
Alrighty then. The elections are over (well almost) and so I can get back to some normal business.
The first thing on my own plate is that I never got to post my setlist from New Deal last week.
The way it works for my Halloween set is a little different.
I pass out a list of “Costume Party” guests. And then I solicit suggestions of what “guest” I should sing about next. People pick guests and I pick out a song for them. It’s a lot to keep track of so I deviated from my usual practice of noting who requested what.
I was thrown a couple of curves. For one thing, I need more songs next time for the “Bat” costume.
By the time someone asked for it, I’d already played the song for a different ‘guest’. And then later, someone else who came late asked for “Bat” again, and I talked them into an alternate choice.
The coolest thing was that aside from my own regulars, the room was host to 10 other patrons that night. That’s is actually comparable to how the main room has been before. If this trend continues, I will be a lot less grumpy about playing in the back room.
There were a couple of profoundly uncool things that started the evening. Fortunately they were dealt with and worked around. Again, I proved unstoppable, but I’m getting tired of having to prove it.
In some ways, these things do fall under the “shit happens” category. But here again, there’s this timing aspect going on that I just can’t ignore, because this timing issue is downright predictable.
Anyway, the first thing was that one of my harmonicas just turned up missing. Ordinarily, I might succeed in avoiding playing songs in that key, and even brag or laugh about it. But last Thursday was a special gig and I really wanted to at least have access to my whole repertoire. So Sonya gamely went out and got a replacement from Atomic Music. (And then it turned out that I didn’t need it. Grrr!) That left the room empty for awhile, but thankfully it wasn’t very long. The other thing that happened was that I was having all kinds of trouble getting my spare guitar to show up in the mix. Turns out, that it wasn’t Penelope’s fault after all, but the failure of the tube in my preamp. Without the tube, I lost a lot of gain and tone, but at least I got a decent impedance transform out of it. Folks said that it sounded ok, but I could really tell that I wasn’t putting out my best. Penelope sounds ok, but that pre-amp makes a huge difference too.
But again, I was so fortunate that what suckage there was, was effectively and pragmatically worked around and thru. That in and of itself is a huge difference between now and just a couple of years ago.
I have another session with Caroline on Friday, where hopefully more improvements can be wrought.
Oh, and lest I forget- A huge improvement is in the offing where sound in my van is concerned. In a gesture that is astonishingly typical of him,
jmax315 has made good on his offer to gift me his old car stereo. It is going to be very easy to install and since he also included it’s brackets and hardware, I have a lot of options for how to install it. I’d like to find some workaround that allows me to also still plug in Sonya’s Ipod, but I can do that by either installing it parallel to my old system or figuring out how to give the new one a line in. Or maybe just accepting that CD and Radio are a fine thing. It’s still a net gain on the sound quality and the capability fronts. I don't have radio right now.
On Saturday, CPC had it’s Samhain “Picnic With The Ancestors”. It was a great success as always. I got in some nice music making and did some nice schmoozing with both old friends and some new faces as well. And again, it was an extremely powerful and meaningful ceremony. We wound up staying much later than we thought we would because one of our key players was feeling sick and had to cut out. But it was still well worth it.
Sunday, we got a rare, rare treat. A day at home where we dealt with housework , and domestic things. I also got some extra sleep, not just in the morning but also a very excellent afternoon nap during NASCAR.
And lots of hugs and snuggles with my sweetie!!!

2006-11-09 14:32 (UTC)My bad.
I must have been throwing so many things at the Television that the ones bouncing back and hitting me in the head have given me memory damage.
Hmm. Wonder if I can sue Bush for that...
