This was my first time at this place and if it were a battle it would have
been a draw at best. This was a LOUD environment. I don't think I've ever
played against such a noise floor. The result was that in order to even
hear myself, I had to be loud enough that I was fighting feedback the whole
time.
And so I wound up with a double whammy where people who were too close
found me too loud and people who were not much farther away found me
nearly inaudible, especially the instruments.
Some friends showed up, so I wasn't alone, and I got some very nice comp-
liments too from some of the customers. I'm not sure that this is a great
venue for me, but it was a learning experience for sure, one of the lessons
being that I want to check out my gear and see what I can do to push it
harder in adverse conditions and not wind up awash in feedback.
I at least want to make it so I can hear myself better.
But it wasn't all bad. There were some moments in this set for sure.
Folsom Prison Blues, despite the challenges was about the best I've ever
played it, and it did get recorded. Pending a reality check, this take
could very well wind up on a future album, so just for that alone the
gig was a win. And I was in very good voice the entire night, and I'm
wondering if I should pretend I'm singing under these conditions every
time, because the fight brought out more energy from me.
And even tho the manager had me wrap up early rather than
have me in a wrestling match with the sound all nite, I was paid in full,
which was more than honorable
