Comments: This set started out kind of annoying. Lots of gremlins making stuff not work, including needing to run over to the store and buy a battery for my mic. That and also the very bad mood of dealing with last week's drama. However, it turned out to be a very cool and interesting set. Four brand new people came, as well as Cat & Jason. Also, check out the request/songs I picked ratio. I LIKE that much participation in my set. Alot of great stuff gets asked for that I wouldn't ordinarily think of playing. Another thing I liked in this set was my mini-set in honor of Syd Barrett's passing. Syd's stuff has always had a special appeal to me, not just for it's psychedelic aesthetic, but also from the point of view of having been a real British Schoolboy when I was young, there's alot of very tangibly British elements in Syd's faerie tales that really resonates with that part of myself.
So having made sure that some of his songs are in my repertoire, I always have some of those feelings and elements to share when I sing too.

20) Son Of A Son Of A Sailor
21) Sloop John B
22) Across The Universe (req- crewmate)
23) Sailors' Hymn

Comments: I'm really getting to like this gig alot, even tho it's a hot one lately.
My tips and occasional CD sales are pushing this gig's pay up into the range of my typical good days in Old Town, and the crew are getting comfortable asking for songs they want. The owner keeps grinning every time he sees me and I even caught him talking me up to one of the customers last week. AND they send me home with SO MUCH brunch leftovers that I can barely get it to the car and rarely finish it all during the week.

Clipper City 7/30/06

19) A Pirate Looks At Forty
20) Brandy
21) A Drop Of Nelson's Blood
22) Sailors' Hymn
23) Dear Prudence (req-crewmate)

Comments: This week was extra cool. The boat was PACKED because of a big group on an outing from the Washington Ski Society. I got LOTS of complements, especially for my voice (YAY!) and one lady who really stood out who said she was dreading that the "live music" would be over amplified and not stuff she liked and was so happy that I was neither.
It's turning out that I was very wise to add "Brandy" to my repertoire. 70's Bubblegum Pop song that it may, (as I mentioned before), I like the story and, well, there's a reason why it was a big hit. Like "Jamaica Farewell", this song pushes alot of nostalgia buttons, and while alot of what I do in this gig is mostly background, more and more often, I'm getting actual attention and applause for this song (and more people singing along than the Jimmy Buffet, Beatles or even "Sloop John B"). And just like "Jamaica Farewell", almost every time I play it, I'll have someone come up and want to talk to me about it later, sharing memories of where and when they heard it and memories that the song brings up.

I like that part of my job alot.
