Immensly Proud (again)
Friday, 24 February 2006 11:03Like all good teenagers, my daughter
sagesaria can procrastinate a bit too much, can execute championship level "slacking", miss the big picture, or the Important Details, not realise that she's headed straight for certain doom in a handbasket, etc, BUT
When she gets her act together WATCH OUT!!!
Last night, AGAIN she blew away an auditorium full of people at her school's talent show.
The mic'ing of her guitar sucked ducks nuts (I SOOO wanted to throttle whomever did their sound), and the noise floor of 1000 high-schoolers was just a hideous sight to behear, and the challenges were legion, and while there was the usual suspects with the usual wide range of talent, she actually had some real competition to match up to.
And yet, she shone bright bright bright.
Having been her coach for this and knowing intimately every detail of her arrangement of "Landslide", I could sort out what was noise and what was her. Had the sound been done properly, I'm very sure that her classmates would have heard as flawless a performance from her as I could.
Somehow, tho, they knew.
She has an ability, when she performs, to project a genuine sweetness, and a shameless vulnerability that (based on too many high school nightmares) you'd THINK would provoke a round of catcalls. Instead, she wins you over. Alot of it has to do, I think, with it being apparent that even tho she's obviously a freshman at this game, she's got some journeyman level moves that just sneak up and grab you. You just know somehow, that when she gets it right, it's not an accident. It's astonishing to behold.
And yes, I DO take some credit. As often as I can, I share what I know of playing well, singing better, and performing with her, and DANG if she doesn't pick it up! She has a lot of natural ability that she could coast on just fine, but she's learning the GOOD way that hard work, diligent practice, and attention to detail CAN AND DOES provide an upgrade from polite applause to an auditorium packed full of people chanting your name!
Excuse me while I pump my fist into the air a few dozen more times!
